SPEJ’s Business Areas
Sony Pictures Entertainment (Japan) Inc. (SPEJ) is a subsidiary of U.S.-based Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE). SPEJ has four business divisions: Film Distribution, Distribution, Networks and International Productions, and also operates four channels run by its group companies: Animax, Kids Station, AXN and AXN Mystery.
SPE's global operations encompass motion picture production, acquisition and distribution; television production, acquisition and distribution; television networks; digital content creation and distribution; operation of studio facilities; and development of new entertainment products, services and technologies.
SPE’s Motion Picture Group production organizations include Columbia Pictures, Screen Gems, TriStar Pictures, Sony Pictures Animation, Stage 6 Films, AFFIRM Films, and Sony Pictures Classics. The company's total motion picture library, with more than 3,500 titles, includes 12 Best Picture Academy Award® winners.
Sony Pictures Television (SPT) is one of the television industry’s leading content providers, producing, distributing and carrying programming worldwide in every genre and for every platform. In addition to managing one of the industry’s largest libraries of award-winning feature films, television shows and formats, SPT is home to a thriving global content business, operating 24 wholly-owned or joint-venture production companies in 12 countries, as well as linear and digital channels around the world.
Film Distribution
SPEJ’s Film Distribution markets and distributes movies created by SPE’s Motion Picture Group. In addition, SPEJ also distributes acquired or sublicensed foreign and Japanese local films.
Distribution Business
SPEJ’s Distribution provides high-quality entertainment for the enjoyment of consumers with different lifestyles through 4K ULTRA HD™ Disc, Blu-ray Disc™, DVD, TV/digital delivery and mobile access, which all incorporate the newest technologies. SPEJ not only offers content created by the SPE Motion Picture Group and SPT but also Japanese and foreign films, television programs and animation. SPEJ also licenses content from SPE’s library to broadcasting stations and on-demand service providers in Japan, including 4K HDR content and game show formats.
Networks Business
SPEJ Networks represents SONY group channels Animax, Kids Station, AXN, AXN Mystery, Music on! TV and Asia Dramatic TV in distribution deals with CATV, IPTV and other media platforms.
International Productions Business
The International Production unit of SPEJ produces Japanese feature-length movies as part of the worldwide local-language production initiative of Sony Pictures International Productions (SPIP).
